These series of pages are intended as a meeting place for SHSU Library Science students and professors. In particular, we want to share with new students some information about
our program, about your expectations, our expectations, and the profession of librarianship. We hope that current and former students will contribute and help us welcome and
acclimate new students to graduate studies and to librarianship. We also hope that our graduates will help us build this wiki by suggesting topics that could be a part of continuing
I will be taking 532 and 570 during SS II. I have checked Blackboard and there is no information about textbooks. I wonder how to find out what texts are needed? I have a vacation scheduled and would like to order texts.

During these hard economic times, many school districts are having to reduce and crunch budgets. I just wondered if it had come up in any school districts about the library being one of the budgets to crunch? If so, did you hear any compelling arguments for/against the library? I know that a district in California closed their libraries last year, and I am curious to see how much this is happening in Texas. Thank you.
As in may school districts including mine in the valley, budget cuts have definitely affected the libraries. There are about four or five campuses (my school included) that lost the library aide to the classrooms this school year. Paraprofessionals are not being replaced when they leave or get reassigned to another campus. Not sure how the other districts are doing in Texas, but we are all feeling the stress one way or another.
Our library is definitely on a crunch. I know that our administration hired an aid to fill the librarian spot because it is much cheaper. I know that that is pretty much the only reason they did not hire a certified librarian. In attending the library science classes I know how important librarians are to the school so I am really worried about how things will end up this year. I know that at the beginning of the year the aid was getting rid of tons of teacher resources in the library that were just ordered last year by our librarian. I guess since she didn't know about how teachers also utilize the library, she decided to hand them out to two teachers. I thought this was not a good sign since all teachers could have used those new resources and now only two can. I don't know of any schools around here closing their libraries, just cutting back on the certified librarians and putting aids in their place. I think that is becoming a new trend. Hopefully, I can convince the administrators at our school to rethink that current trend. I found this article especially helpful and plan to present it to our principal. You may need your SHSU account info to sign in to read it. The article is from the ERIC database.
I think you will thoroughly enjoy the lively discussions and book recommendations you will receive on the discussion boards. Having at least one face-to-face meeting per class also helps to glue the relationships you have developed online. It is such a relief to know others struggle just as you do in the library and you have LOTS of friends and colleagues to discuss these problems and joys.
Any truth to the rumor about delicious.com discontinuing? There was a post on tlc and a link on how to change to diigo. Is there another similar site than we can use. I really got used to posting to delicious...

Here is a collaborative map of districts across the country that are losing librarians. It's open to anyone who wants to add information.

It's not been officially verified, but it looks pretty probable.
I'm testing diigo.com. You can export bookmarks from delicious and import them into diigo.
I hope Yahoo changes their minds about this.
